Glaucoma can have serious implications for both your vision and your eye health. It is a an eye disease that develops and progresses “silently.” That is to say that well before you notice any symptoms, it is moving through its early stages. By the time you experience obvious signs, it typically means that glaucoma is advanced, and you may suffer vision loss or optic nerve damage, both of which might not be reversible. At Riverdell Family Vision Care, we are your experts in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.
What causes it to begin with? It is an imbalance between the amount of fluid created by your eyes and the amount that is drained. Your eye pressure then increases. If it gets too high, that’s when your optic nerves are at risk. At worst, total blindness is a possibility. Before our glaucoma treatment in Emerson, you will get a complete examination, including the special testing called tonometry, which measures your internal eye pressure. The point is to come up with a conclusive diagnosis, after which evaluation can be made about the best way to proceed with our glaucoma treatment in Emerson. Making that determination will depend on how far the disease has progressed, among other factors. In mild to moderate cases, special eyedrops might be all you need to reduce the amount of fluid your eyes make. That will correct the underlying imbalance between fluid production and drainage. Other options, typically for more severe glaucoma, include laser surgery in order to make your eyes more efficient at draining fluid; and microsurgery to create a new channel from which the fluid can drain.
